With Godmother

Founded in 2003, the Always Wanted To (“AWT”) Dance Troupe’s fourth season is underway. AWT is a community based celebration of wellness and positive energy. We dance for ourselves, primarily, but will perform for seniors and other groups as a joyful form of community service.

AWT began as a collaborative project which emphasizes getting and staying fit through a combination of cardiovascular exercise also known as “cardiofunk,” modern and jazz dance forms and spiritual renewal. Our participants run the full gamut of ages, backgrounds, energy levels, and sensibilities. Yet, all of us are devoted to this sisterhood and take our commitment to AWT very seriously.

"Saturday was excellent. It was conditioning and then some. As for Thursday's dance workshop, yeah... it's a look forward to event on my schedule. I'm glad to be part of this wonderful adventure, ladies!"

Cassandre M. Galette. Esq.

In August 2006, AWT unveiled its premier performance entitled “Dance Your Dance” featuring the original eight troupe members, Judge Bensonetta Tipton Lane, Rita Finley, Ph.D., Sharon Chester Barnes, Esq., Maria Carter, J.D., Wynette Blathers, RCR, CCR, Ms. Velda North, Monica Parker. M.D. and Founder, Judge Gail S. Tusan. Signature pieces were choreographed by Lauren Washington, Erin Finley and Allison Fuster, all graduates of the Dekalb School of the Arts. The troupe has expanded to feature additional dancers, Rev. Celeste Finley Brewer, Prof. Julie M. T. Walker, Adwoa Ghartey-Tagoe Seymour, Esq., Camellia Moore, Esq., and Annette "Andi" Anderson, J.A. We’re living out our dream. What about you?

This project involves women of all ages. Our program consists of weekly dance technique (primarily jazz, modern and a little hip hop) workshops conducted by Ms. Jessica Tubbs, who has participated in dance programs at Woodward Academy School of Dance, College Park School of Dance, Studio Dionne, and Callenwolde Center for Performing Arts and lots of laughs, hugs and whenever the mood hits us even some salty sisterly tears. We dance in celebration of our triumphs and for strength during life’s challenging moments.

The Story Behind the Dance

I have wanted to dance for as long as I can remember. Oh sure, I’ve stolen a few private moments dancing to a CD at home or even dared to go public with a few twirls taken in the parking lot after attending an inspring dance performance. But despite talking about wanting to sign up for a dance class, I never seemed to get around to doing it.
